Synopsis

1752, Al-Dana is a woman in a man’s world where Pearl Diving is the only way of life. Her grandfather’s mysterious finding of the “Black Pearl” sets the village and Al-Dana on an epic journey. But when the black pearl goes missing, Al-Dana is accused of bringing about a curse upon her hometown. She sets out on an adventure to track the missing pearl and enters the wonderland of the mysterious waters of the sea. The story revolves around self-discovery and grief, along the journey discovering Al-Dana’s profound sorrow stemming from the loss of her father and the emotional challenges she faces after experiencing a miscarriage. As she navigates the complex landscape of pain and trauma, the narrative delves into Al-Dana’s journey of coping with these losses and the resilience she discovers within herself when faced with impossible choices.

About the Director

Nora Al-Subai, a Qatari writer and director born and raised in France, graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Business Administration. Her short film, ‘My Hero’ (2013), premiered at the Ajyal Youth Film Festival, winning Best Short Film. The film was also featured at the Cannes Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, Children’s Film Festival in Seattle, and Latin Arab Festival in Buenos Aires. Additionally, she wrote and directed ‘Al-Johara’ (2016), which premiered at the Ajyal Film Festival 2016, winning the Special Jury Award, and was showcased in international film festivals, including Cannes, Sarajevo Film Festival, and Florence Film Festival.
