DTFF Contemporary World Cinema

Oct 28, 2012

This year, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival is bringing local and international audiences a showcase of 22 films in the Contemporary World Cinema section. Taking place from 17-24 November, the Festival will screen films from over 40 countries. Stretching from India to Iceland, the programme’s breadth creates a truly international feel. In addition to the global showcase, DTFF is also focusing on the region by including more than 30 MENA premieres.

By blending the local with the international, audiences can experience some of the world’s most sought-after movies in one unique destination. With a multicultural and community minded focus, DTFF offers something for even the most discerning film enthusiast. From classic films like Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (1982), to Martin McDonagh’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ (2012), and the late Yash Chopra`s parting gift to Bollywood cinema ‘Till I Breathe This Life’ (2012), the Festival will provide an unrivalled film experience.

Accentuating the programming are films that are official country selections for the Best Foreign Language Award at the 2013 Oscars. ‘Just the Wind’ (Hungary) is one of the unique works competing in this category. The Contemporary World Cinema line-up will bring some of the most poignant films to Doha including Malik Bendjelloul’s ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ (Sweden, UK), winner of ‘The World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary’ at the Sundance Film Festival.

Central to this year’s Festival is offering something for everyone. The DTFF team balanced challenging subjects with light-hearted family entertainment making sure that viewers from the age of seven to seventy will get their film fix. The most exciting part of DTFF isn’t the red carpet or galas, it’s the opportunity for local audiences to see films that otherwise wouldn’t have screened in this part of the world.

DTFF’s hub has also shifted to the heart of the city, Souq Waqif, and also uses the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) and Katara Cultural Village to host many types of gatherings. Engaging the public is very important and an array of large community events, including Family Days, panel discussions, Doha Talks, and networking events will do just that. Whether you live in Doha or abroad, attending the Festival is a must, and with 85 films from across the globe, viewers will certainly find something they enjoy.
