While television channels are bursting with Ramadan soap operas and advertising, films which capture the holy month’s spirituality are not as easy to find. Here are some starters and suggestions; if you have more get in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter or leave us a comment below.

The Message (1977)
Director Moutsapha Akkad (1930 – 2005) wanted “The Message” to help close the gap between western and Islamic worlds. Telling the story of Prophet Mohammed’s life, without ever depicting him, cost $17 million and earned an Academy Award nomination for best original score. The momentous film was acclaimed in the east and west. Filmmakers have failed to portray one of history’s most important characters as successfully ever since.
Perfect for: A weekend Suhour gathering

Journey to Mecca: In the footsteps of Ibn Batutta (2009)
Contrary to popular belief, Ibn Batutta is not just the name of a gigantic shopping mall in Dubai. The Moroccan explorer journeyed 75,000 miles from his native Morocco to Saudi to complete the Haj pilgrimage. He returned 29 years later. This visually mind-blowing docu-drama captures his journey’s essence and can only be watched as its makers intended – on a giant screen.
Perfect for: Your projector

Islam: Empire of Faith (2000)
Narrated by Ben Kingsley (so is “Journey to Mecca”, in fact), this three-hour PBS documentary series is a comprehensive introduction to one of the world’s greatest religions. Classic scenes in slow motion from around the Muslim world are mixed with insightful interviews.
Perfect for: Watching in parts during the month of Ramadan

Fordson Faith, Fasting, Football (2011)
“Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football” is a documentary about a mostly Arab-American high school football team in training for an important game during Ramadan’s last ten days. Michael Moore said the film is powerful, intelligent and moving and urged “everyone in the country to watch this film”.
Perfect for: Movie night with friends
