Transformation, Alchemy, Journey: A Still filmmaking workshop with Sabine El Chamaa

This 10-day, hands-on “Still Filmmaking” workshop blends genres of experimental and narrative short films with photography. Exploring techniques of storytelling, lighting, sound, and montage, participants will to create a short photo-film with guidance from filmmaker Sabine El Chamaa.
Taking place at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, participants will draw inspiration from the upcoming exhibition “Cai Guo Qiang: Saraab”. In order to participate, projects proposed in the application should relate to one of three of the major themes central to the artist’s exhibition and creative process: Transformation, Alchemy, and Journey.
Though starting from common themes, each project will be unique interpretation of one of the three themes, drawing inspiration from personal stories, group discussions, film viewings, and a visit by the artist Cai Guo Qiang. Sabine El Chamaa will encourage participants to experiment with the boundaries of the medium of film to create a personal, experimental photo-film.
Requirements:
To be accepted into the workshop, participants must:
- Own and know how to use a digital and/or analog camera
- Have basic knowledge of how to record sounds
- Have a basic understanding of film editing software
- Submit a short story, creative essay, script, or any other form of a treatment that is related to one of the following three themes: Transformation, Alchemy, or Journey. Writing submission does not need to directly address this theme, but should be inspired by it.
