Requiem for a Tribe

Spring Grants 2024 - Post-Production Stage

Marjan Khosravi / Feature Documentary / Iran, Spain, Qatar / 2024 / 70 min / Original Language: Persian / Interests: Documentary

Synopsis

Hajar has a dream. She wants to reconnect with her childhood memories and the traditions of her people, the Bakhtiari, a nomadic tribe from southwestern Iran. In 1976, American director Anthony Howarth shot the extraordinary documentary ‘People of the Wind’ to portray the massive migratory action of the Bakhtiari, which used to move some 500,000 people and up to one million animals over the Zagros Mountains—a unique phenomenon in the world. During those times, the nomads travelled on foot for eight weeks through nature. Hajar was only a child when she appeared in Howarth’s film, and she longs for those beautiful days. Now 55, Hajar faces betrayal by her family and the harsh reality of abandoning her nomadic lifestyle. Climate change, urbanization, and social issues have drastically diminished the traditional migratory activities of the Bakhtiari tribe. Hajar’s journey is a poignant exploration of longing, tradition, and the inevitable changes that come with time, as she seeks to reconnect with her past and the legacy of her people.
